“Jet fuel” smell remains a mystery

A Melbourne Airport investigation has been unable to identify the source of an odour which lingered over Keilor recently.

A number of Keilor residents filed complaints to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) about the smell of “jet fuel” during the weekend of May 26.

EPA metro region manager Daniel Hunt confirmed there were a number of complaints.

“EPA received five reports of odour in the Keilor area on Monday morning,” he said.

“Members of the public described it as a lingering, jet fuel smell, possibly from overhead aircraft or Melbourne Airport.”

“As airports are governed under federal legislation, EPA alerted Melbourne Airport and passed the reports from the public to the Australian Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s airport environment officer for Melbourne Airport.”

Melbourne Airport spokesperson Grant Smith said an investigation failed to identify the cause of the smell.

“In this case the EPA advised us that they’d had a number of calls from Keilor about a fuel smell,” Mr Smith said.

“Our environment team investigated and were unable to determine the source of the odour, but did confirm that there were no incidents that should have led to the odour being caused.”
