A St Albans school for children with mild disabilities is among 17 schools to receive a share of $3.6 million from the state government.
Education Minister James Merlino and St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman were at Jackson School last Tuesday to announce the school would receive $200,000 from the state government’s Inclusive Schools Fund to build a sensory play space.
A spokeswoman from the school said the space, which would encourage the children to learn by “touching and feeling”, would replace an existing playground.
Ms Suleyman said the fund was designed to help government schools support the needs of young people with disabilities.
“Jackson School does an incredible job each and every day supporting kinds in our local community,” she said.
“This funding will allow the school to create a multi-sensory play area for almost 300 students, which can also be used for counselling and wellbeing sessions.”
The funding will also help the Mulhall Drive school to develop a garden and install a small cubby and hiding space with colour and lighting effects.
The new Jackson School facilities are expected to be completed before the end of the year.
