IPC Health has opened an all-ages mental health hub in Melbourne’s western suburbs for those experiencing mental health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The federal government initiative in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is called HeadtoHelp and a new Wyndham Vale site is now open.

IPC Health chief Jayne Nelson said it is an extraordinarily difficult time for many people and the funding greatly increased the region’s capacity to provide mental health services to the community when they need it most.

“Mental health services are vital to a healthy community and we can now ensure services are provided right now and over the long term,” Mrs Nelson said.

IPC Health’s HeadtoHelp hub is a free service that will provide a safe space for people to access early intervention mental health care over the next 12 months.

This will include access to a range of connected services for those who are concerned for their mental wellbeing or the wellbeing of their families.

“The Wyndham centre is fully operational and the team at IPC Health is working with its partners to ensure those who need this support and those who are at risk have immediate access,” Mrs Nelson said.

The Wyndham Vale hub is one of 15 established across the state by Victoria’s Primary Health Networks (PHNs).

North Western Melbourne PHN chief Christopher Carter said the hubs will be critical to meet burgeoning demand for mental health support.

“Many people in north, west and central Melbourne may have never experienced mental ill-health before and are facing new challenges due to COVID-19,” Adjunct Associate Professor Carter said.

“HeadtoHelp will provide a welcoming place for everyone who needs mental health and wellbeing support, whether their mental health issues are pre-existing or have emerged during the pandemic.”

HeadtoHelp is open between 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday or visit headtohelp.org.au
