Historic landmark set to close

The Overnewton Castle in Keilor will close its doors as an event venue in March.

The estate owners, who host tours, weddings, high teas and other events at the historic venue, announced its closure in a Facebook post.

“Over the decades, we’ve had the immense privilege of being part of your most meaningful moments. To everyone who has walked through our doors, thank you,” the post read.

Locals commented on the post and wished the venue owners all the best.

“A well deserved rest and family time for you… I will miss photographing weddings at your amazing venue, but I have so many beautiful memories to look back on with my lovely client,” one commenter wrote.

“That’s really sad news. I love officiating weddings there, and my wife and friends love the high teas. Another beautiful venue lost in the west,” wrote another person.

The Overnewton Estate was purchased by Dr Leslie Norton with his wife in 1975.

Dr Norton and his wife conducted major repairs over several decades to restore the building to its original glory, and lived and worked at the site with their family.

The Overnewton castle has a colourful history spanning more than 176 years.

The building was originally owned by William James Taylor, a Scottish immigrant who moved to Australia in 1840.
