Brimbank’s newly established Hackerspace community group is claiming its first public speaking event a success.
As part of its push to increase community awareness of high-tech, the group’s first event featured ABC head of education Annabel Astbury.
Brimbank Hackerspace vice president Lauren Sayer said Ms Astbury was an exciting speaker for the event.
“Annabel was absolutely fantastic. She’s new to the role after the ABC restructure and this was her second speaking event, so we were extremely grateful that she chose to come west,” Ms Sayer said.
“She spoke about the ABC and its mission to educate, inform and entertain and how they are supporting their mission through the provision of resources such as ABC Splash, which is the most widely-used teacher resource website in Australia.”
“Also highlighted was the potential for students and young people to really make an impact in a high-tech world with entries from ABC’s
War on Waste competition shown as a demonstration.”
Ms Sayer said crowd numbers far exceeded expectations.
“We didn’t have a very long lead in, however we still managed to get 60 expressions of interest and a crowd of over 30 people attend the event, which was absolutely amazing,” she said.
Hackerspace has plans for a further five talks, which will be held across the first half of 2018.
“In January, we’re going to release a calendar of speaking events for the first six months of the year,” Ms Sayer said.
“We really want to reflect public demand and welcome suggestions from the community.”
