Keilor Downs College’s gymnasium will be turned into a theatre for the school’s first musical production this week.
Students have been busily preparing for three months and will perform their rendition of High School Musical Junior across four shows starting Thursday night.
Musical director Cat Adey was filling in at the school last year and was blown away by the talent.
“I was here last year while the singing teacher was away and really wanted the kids to have this experience, so before I left I floated the idea and it went from there,” she said.
“It’s been a big commitment from the kids, but they’ve done so well. The energy has been terrific and we’ve even had buy-in from the parents who have helped with costumes.”
Ms Adey said it’s a show for everyone.
“It’s a really fun musical about teen life at school. It tackles the issues kids face each day, but it’s appropriate for the whole family.
“It’s just a really fun night out.”
While it might be the first musical production the school has put on, Ms Adey said some stars have been born.
“Our lead male for instance didn’t even audition, we had to convince him after we heard him singing in the corridor, but now he’s one of the most dedicated performers.”
The show will run from 7pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and will also feature a matinee from 2pm Saturday.
