Brimbank council has welcomed news that heritage buildings on the former Sunshine Technical School site won’t be demolished.
As reported by Star Weekly, the state government had issued an advanced tender notice for demolition in relation to the former Sunshine Secondary School sites due to vandalism and antisocial behaviour on the sites.
The decision has angered residents and the council, who want the heritage buildings at the Sunshine site on 111 and 129 Derby Road saved.
The council has lodged nominations to Heritage Victoria for both the Sunshine Technical School building and the Sunshine Girls Technical School building to be listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Footscray MP Katie Hall provided an update on social media, which provided relief to residents and the council.
“The Victorian School Building Authority is considering demolition of certain buildings, however this will not include any of the buildings recently nominated by the council for including in the the Victorian Heritage Register,” the update said.
“The VSBA is consulting with Brimbank council in relation to the interim use of the site and protection of the heritage-normatined buildings
“It is proposed that the open space at the site will be made available for us by the adjacent Sunshine primary school as well community recreational use outside school hours, until the site is activated for a future education use.”
Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said the council welcomes an assurance by the state government that the heritage buildings on the former Sunshine Secondary School will be retained and protected.
“Last month council had applied for the heritage buildings on the site to be included cn the Victorian Heritage Register. We hope for a successful outcome to ensure the long term recognition and protection of the heritage buildings.
“Any interim use of the other part of the site for community purposes would also be very welcome.”
