Brimbank crochet enthusiasts are encouraged to get their hooks and needles ready, as a new yarn club is preparing to welcome participants.
The Friends of Cruickshank Park initiative will be known as ‘The Yarn Club’ and will be welcome to people from all ages.
Club member Lola Anderson led the first official project for the club, which saw the club install an Anzac Day wreath at Cruickshank Park, complete with red and purple crochet poppies to remember Australian and New Zealand human and animal casualties.
The project saw a collaboration between the club and the children from the Clare Court Early Learning Centre in Yarraville, as the base of the wreath was repurposed from bird nests the children create from collected sticks.
Friends of Cruickshank Park member Dave Lewis said the club aims to enable people to develop their crochet skills or learn a new hobby.
“The benefits of the yarn club are an increase in social interaction for those that feel isolated, as well as connect younger and older community members in friendships,” he said.
“Through activities such as ‘yarn bombing’, the yarn club will also raise awareness of different causes and events such as the Blue Tree Project for mental health and the pink trees promoting breast cancer awareness.”
Mr Lewis said the club has applied for some funding to allow for seating.
