The Keilor Electric Off-Road Car Association (KEORCA) had its beginnings out the back of Orchards Hobbies in Hoffmans Road, Niddrie in early 1985.
Today it has more than 100 members, including some champions, and hosts some of the sport’s biggest events.
KEORCA track manager Jack Engel said while off-road racing was not a traditionally mainstream sport, it’s popularity has steadily increased.
“Our numbers have been increasing for a while,” he said. “Holding big events like the Keilor Cup also helps attract numbers to the track and help us promote our club.”
However the increase in numbers also poses challenges for the small club. The facilities are in need of upgrades, with members needing to walk to the local McDonald’s to use a toilet.
“We’ve put in a proposal to council for a grant to help us upgrade our facilities,” Mr Engel said. “What we’d really like is a roof over the track, which would make the track usable 24/7. At the moment we’re beholden to the weather.”
“We’ve had a number of our members represent Australia in the sport and we’re constantly encouraging them to compete at both state and international level.
“We’d love to improve our facilities to better reflect that.”
