Brimbank council has committed to the entire municipality using 100 per cent renewable electricity from solar, wind and water by 2040, as part of a plan to achieve zero-net greenhouse gas emissions.
The target is part of the 100 per cent Renewable Brimbank program, which will be launched on Saturday, April 9. The 100% Renewable Brimbank program aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity throughout the municipality by 2040.
In a statement, council said making the change to renewable energy would not only be beneficial to the environment but also to costs for residents and businesses.
Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the program will be a positive step forward for the future.
“Brimbank council declared a climate emergency in 2019. In 2020 it set an ambitious target of zero net emissions by 2040, and council believes the key way we can get there is by ‘electrifying everything’ and committing to 100% renewable electricity,” Cr Nguyen said.
“By taking action today we can all help make Brimbank’s environment cleaner, greener, cooler and healthier for generations to come.
“Investing in renewable electricity from the grid and from solar on our roofs, and electric appliances such as electric heating cooling and appliances, is not only an investment in our environment but also a good long-term investment for our home and business budgets. It is the way of future.
“Everyone’s efforts – big and small – will make a difference. Let’s work together to achieve 100 per cent Renewable Brimbank.”
The event will be held at St Albans Community Centre, from 10-am-1pm
