Western Health has celebrated the launch of an initiative helping those in greatest need.
The organisation’s new website, The Greatest Need Project, went live at a gala dinner earlier this month.
Western Health chief executive Russell Harrison told guests that too many people in Melbourne’s west were living without basics many take for granted, as often seen by hospital staff treating patients who can’t afford essentials such as food.
“It is in circumstances like these that we see some of the greatest need and our staff feel compelled to do whatever they can to help – down to paying for items out of their own pockets,” Mr Harrison said. “This is one of the reasons we developed the Greatest Need Project. Our staff are always humbled at how little needs to be done to make a difference for one patient or one family.
“But our patients rarely ask for help and will often turn down offers of assistance, saying they know there are patients worse off than they are.”
The Greatest Need Project shares the experiences of staff and patients at Western Health.
The project’s two main goals are to help raise funds for patients in need and to support research at Western Health.
