Mowing works along the Western Ring Road in Sunshine West have begun.
Residents in The Avenue Estate had raised concerns about the length of the grass and rubbish at the back of their properties in recent weeks.
Early last week, resident John Geddes said the grass presented a fire risk and was calling for the area to be better maintained. He said he had contacted Brimbank council and Vic Roads about the safety concerns.
He got his wish, with the grass on the land, owned by Vic Roads, mowed on Thursday.
A Department of Transport spokesperson said fire preparation is a focus for the department all year round.
“Our crews have been out in force across our network – we mow tens of thousands of kilometres of grass each year, and we work with emergency services to ensure we respond to any risks.“
This round of work, including litter collection, is expected to be completed in coming weeks.
Illegal dumping remains an ongoing challenge for the department and local municipalities, especially while some people continue to discard rubbish on roadsides.
