Pop-up food relief markets could soon be established at various locations across Melbourne, the state government has announced.
Disability, Ageing and Carers minister Colin Brooks announced a $1.25 million trial program on Thursday, July 21, which the government hopes will respond to the increasing cost of living that is seeing more Victorians, including those in Brimbank who are in need of food relief.
Mr Brooks said continuing to support food relief programs was vital.
“We are ensuring our communities can provide nourishing meals for their families – because no Victorian should worry about having enough to eat,” he said.
“With this assistance, food relief organisations across the state will be able to continue their important work getting food on the tables of those most in need in our community.”
The pop-up markets will provide fresh, healthy and nutritious produce to people experiencing food insecurity.
Organisations can also apply for grants that will enable them to provide food that is tailored to local cultural preferences.
For small projects, a grant of up to $25,000 to run a minumum of four markets over a two month period can be secured, and large projects can receive up to $85,000 for organisations to hold a minimum of 10 markets over a six month partnership.
Applications close on Wednesday, August 17.
