St Albans town centre received a facelift last week with the installation of new lights to improve safety in the popular shopping strip.
Brimbank council installed 24 under-awning lights along Main Road West (between Amy and Mitchell streets) and along Princess Street and St Albans Road as part of an initiative to improve the quality of lighting, safety and natural surveillance in those areas.
The $20,000 project was funded by a state government community safety grant and provided to the St Albans Business Group Association and the council.
This is the third consecutive year funding has been provided to the association and council to improve perceptions of safety and the quality of lighting along footpaths in St Albans.
The association said each new installation has been accompanied by an upswing in business and decrease in anti-social behaviour in the area.
The lighting upgrades come on the back of a funding commitment in this year’s council budget for a number of improvements to the St Albans town centre, including improved footpaths, a new pedestrian footbridge and additional carparking.
St Albans Business Group Association secretary Ross Morfea said last year it was “good to see things finally happening in the area after pushing for a while”.
