Primary school students from St Albans and Sunshine are gearing up to get active.

Monmia Primary School at Keilor Downs is one of eight Brimbank schools participating in the Bluearth active leaders program.

The Bluearth program demonstrates to students, teachers and school communities the importance of movement and the benefits of leading active lives.

Principal Lorraine Bell says the focus on getting students moving has already had an impact at Monmia Primary School.

“This program has such a positive framework, which engages everyone in fun physical movement, as well as providing opportunities for mindfulness,” she says.

“Teachers, students and parents are looking forward to being part of this exciting program.

“I’m confident it will not only develop improved health, wellbeing and education outcomes but, importantly, it will create a positive, connected community within the school and beyond the schoolyard.”

Students involved in the program will work together to co-ordinate and deliver two innovative movement projects – one for their school and one for their local community.

The events will focus on how much fun movement makes.

Assistant principal Lucy Vorpasso says the initiative is a good fit with the mental health and wellbeing framework the school has been implementing.

“We have seen high levels of engagement from the years 3/4 students and staff … staff are eager to incorporate the strategies into classroom programs,” she says.
