Brimbank residents can bag a bargain from the comfort of their own homes in the upcoming Garage Sale Trail.

For the first time ever, Brimbank council will deliver the Trail as a virtual garage sale event

on November 21 and 22.

This year’s Garage Sale Trail: Recovery Edition, encourages residents to make and save money by buying and selling second-hand goods, reducing waste and reusing items in the process.

This online alternative ensures COVID-19 safety measures remain in place and keep the community safe whilst allowing everyone to participate in the initiative which aims to divert landfill and farewell fast fashion.

Brimbank chief executive Helen Morrissey said she hoped to see the whole community get involved in the event and use this opportunity to declutter and rehome unwanted items whilst having some fun and making some extra money at a time when people really need it.

She said the initiative is part of Council’s commitment to reducing landfill and supporting residents to reuse items and reduce waste at home.

“Not only is the event a fantastic way to save and make money from the comfort of your home, it gives people the chance to connect with their neighbours and community, something that has been greatly missed since the pandemic began,” Ms Morrissey said.

Everyone can get involved virtually.

Households, schools, community groups, businesses and anyone else who wants to join is welcome.

This year the focus is on second-hand items that are easily shippable or can be picked up contact-free such as clothing, household items, plants and books.

“I expect there will be some unique treasures at this year’s event and despite our focus being shifted towards the pandemic, the issue of waste in our community hasn’t gone away,” Ms Morrissey said.

Brimbank Libraries is leading the way with its very own group Virtual Garage Sale where staff from each branch will be donating preloved items (bags, shoes, plants and homewares) which will then be available to be viewed online. Customers can then register their interest in items and once allocated, can pick up via click and collect from the nominated library. There will be no charge for these items.

Registrations are free and now open to anyone who wants to host a sale or shop the Trail.
