Gaol house rocks for kids

Parents looking for a fun way to fill a day these school holidays could do a lot worse than putting their kids behind bars.

The Old Melbourne Gaol has announced an all-new, limited edition experience exclusively for children.

Escape the Gaol will run all through summer school holidays. The immersive and educational activity is aimed at ages six and up.

Participants will have the opportunity to become inmates and must explore the gaol to discover all the necessary clues to create the perfect escape plan, without being discovered by the prison guards.

Each ‘prisoner’ will be given a notebook containing a number of riddles, which must be deciphered in order to receive directions to hidden clues.

Once the clues are discovered, prisoners must then hunt through the gaol to uncover the answers to pull off a fool-proof escape plan.

National Trust of Australia (Victoria), chief executive Simon Ambrose said Escape the Gaol is the perfect addition for family school holiday itineraries and an experience not to be missed.

“Escape the Gaol aims to engage the younger generation through a fun and interactive activity that also encourages learning about Melbourne’s rich criminal history,” Mr Ambrose said.

“By offering an immersive experience, we are reimagining the ways that families and tourists alike, can experience one of Melbourne’s iconic historical landmarks.”

Since its opening in 1845, the Old Melbourne Gaol has held some of Australia’s most dangerous criminals, including the infamous Ned Kelly.

Today, visitors can experience what it was like for the men and women who were held at the Gaol all those years ago.

The Old Melbourne Gaol is open daily from 9.30am to 5pm, with the exception of Christmas Day and Good Friday.

The Escape the Gaol experience will be available for a limited time only, from Tuesday, December 26, 2017 to Friday, January 26, 2018.
