Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll has called on Brimbank council to reconsider its stance on buying the former Calder Rise Primary School site.
Mr Carroll wrote to Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice last week, requesting the council reconsider after the sale of its former Sunshine offices sold for $5.581 million.
“I request that, with your current sale of the Sunshine offices, you reconsider your stance regarding the purchase of the Calder Rise site,” Mr Carroll’s letter read.
“The funds acquired can comfortably purchase and build the female and junior sports facilities the community are seeking.”
Mr Carroll said there was a genuine need for the site to be used as a sports venue.
“As you are aware, the site has been identified by the Keilor Football Club and Keilor Sports Club as being required for the growing AFL Women’s league and to cater for growth in children’s sports, as well as the strong local sporting community that Keilor possesses.”
At its March meeting this year, the council turned down a third offer to purchase the site during a heated debate.
Cr Giudice told Star Weekly last week that the council has already put plans in place for the money raised from the office sale.
“The sale of the former Sunshine Municipal Office site was part of the business case for the development of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre,” she said.
“The business case identified the selling of the site to help fund the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre at 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine.
“As was always intended, the proceeds from the sale will offset the costs of the development of the centre.”
