Brimbank council has announced the first recipient of its environmental funding scheme.
Derrimut-based company Langdon Ingredients received the funding for environmental upgrades to its premises under the scheme.
Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said he was pleased to sign the first environmental agreement, which he believes will open the door for a range of improvements to the business.
“The agreements enable owners of any non-residential property in Brimbank to access funding for environmental upgrades such as energy efficient lighting, solar energy, double-glazing, water efficiency and waste minimisation,” Cr Hedditch said.
The initiative was launched in March this year and Cr Hedditch said it was a cost-effective way for businesses to upgrade their premises and reduce the risks associated with rising energy costs.
“The environmental agreements provide businesses with an opportunity to replace old and inefficient equipment with newer more efficient technologies and reap the benefits of operating a more sustainable and efficient building,” he said
“The initiative allows businesses to access loans administered through the council rate system. This removes the need for upfront capital, while competitive interest rates and low-cost financing make these arrangements cost-effective.”
The initiative recognises that commercial and industrial uses are some of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, which Cr Hedditch said was one of the main reasons it was adopted by the council as it aims to reduce emissions across Brimbank.
“The council is actively working to assist the community, including businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce their utility expenses and to improve energy security.”
The agreements, which are undertaken in partnership with the Sustainable Melbourne Fund, have been identified as having the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the commercial and industrial sector significantly.
