The Compassionate Friends Victoria has been named as a finalist in a program that rewards those who help make the world a better place.
The Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World program gives not-for- profit organisations the chance to share in $150,000 in grants.
There are four rounds this year and grants are awarded to finalists and winners in each round. At the end of the year, the four round winners compete for the grand final grants totaling $70,000.
The Compassionate Friends Victoria is the only Victorian-based organisation among six finalists in the first round.
The Compassionate Friends Victoria group offers support and advice to families grieving the loss of a child.
In Sunshine, Kerry King is a group leader and holds regular meetings for grieving parents.
“I found Compassionate Friends because I lost my son to suicide.
“It’s the most wonderful organisation to have after losing a child,” Ms King said.
“They have 24 hours support for you, it’s a fantastic organisation to have.
“I feel good helping people who have gone through what I have.”
Ms King said shared personal experience is a significant part of the group.
“Just speaking to people who have gone through the experience you have makes such a difference, it’s different to speaking to a councillor.
“We laugh, we cry, we hug each other and we all become good friends.”
First round winners are expected to be announced soon.
