Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House members are on a mission.
With grocery chains moving to ditch single-use plastic bags, they are out to make it easy to reduce dependence on plastic, one bag at a time.
Supported by Friends of Kororoit Creek, the neighbourhood house crew gathers each Monday morning to make boomerang bags.
Jessica Gerger, of Friends of Kororoit Creek said the bags were about taking care of the environment in more ways than one.
“The bags are made with recycled fabric, so it’s something created from something old,”
Ms Gerger said.
“There’s a lot of fabric waste out there, so this goes one step further than just helping people with an alternative to plastic bags.”
The bags have been welcomed by shoppers.
“We had a stall at the marketplace in Sunshine last week and we completely sold out of stock,” Ms Gerger said.
“We sold about 70 bags and were blown away by the success.”
Ms Gerger said community engagement was also high.
“It was really interesting to see some of the amazing conversations we had with people on the day,” she said.
“It was all really positive.”
Anyone interested in helping make the bags can meet the group at the Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House at Selwyn Park, Albion, from 9.30am on Mondays.
