Brimbank council’s former library at Sunshine will be demolished within three weeks.
The council awarded a contract in August for the demolition of the temporary library in McCracken Street, along with the east wing of the old council offices in Alexandra Avenue, which are on VicTrack-owned land.
The east wing buildings are due to be demolished early next year.
Power was expected to be turned off by last Friday, the council said, with demolition to follow soon afterwards.
Council’s infrastructure and city services director, Neil Whiteside, said the works, including the removal of all rubble from the library site, would be completed in about four weeks.
Star Weekly revealed last month the joint sale of the land between the council and VicTrack fell over due to “unresolved planning issues”.
The council unveiled its plan last year to rezone the 1.8 hectare block at McCracken Street and Alexandra Avenue – VicTrack owns 6294 square metres and the council 10,070 square metres – to general residential zoning.
The plan was to develop medium density housing.
VicTrack now has a preferred buyer for its parcel of land, with its expression of interest period closing on October 27.
“VicTrack is negotiating with a preferred purchaser, the sale is under offer and we are working to finalise the terms of the sale,” a VicTrack spokesman said. “VicTrack and Brimbank council are working together to end the lease over coming months.”
The council has set a reserve price for its share of the land, but will not comment on buyer interest.
