Footy boss sacked over racist slur

The Albion Football Club has sacked its president following the publication of racist posts on his private Facebook page.

Wayne Finco, who was elected as the club’s president on October 30, 2017, has been a member of the club for more than 30 years.

He was stood down by the club’s committee pending an investigation when knowledge of the posts became public on March 14.

The club released a statement on March 15 saying Mr Finco would not be returning to the presidency.

“The club acknowledge the seriousness of the comments, which were of a racial nature,” the statement said. “Following a full investigation today, the committee of the Albion Football Club have come to the decision that our current president be permanently stood down.

“The Western Region Football League has been consulted as part of this process and is fully supportive of the committee. As a proud, inclusive, multicultural community hub, Albion Football Club denounces racism of any kind and has been a tireless community leader in the promotion of fun, safe environments for people of all backgrounds.

“The comments made in no way reflect the position of the club.”

Mr Finco has since deleted his Facebook page, but posted on March 14 when the investigation began. “Stood down as president of the Albion Football Club … you think I care … 30+ years of service and seeya,” his post read.

“I couldn’t give a flying f . . . about the joint … all because one little dog that sooked up.

“Enjoy continuous failure … hope the players all leave when you cut their payments.”

The sacking continues a turbulent time for the club, which was slapped with a $25,000 fine as part of a three-year bond following a junior grand final last year that ended in violence and a 14-year-old Albion player receiving a life ban.

The WRFL refused to say if any part of the bond would be activated following Mr Finco’s sacking. Mr Finco could not be reached for comment prior to
