The small act of a meal donation made by the Sunshine RSL to veterans during lockdowns put a smile on many people’s faces.

The RSL made and donated meals for 33 weeks during the lockdowns last year and just finished up another 11 weeks of donating meals at the end of this lockdown.

RSL General manager Marjorie Gorman Baldi said the meals made the lives of a lot of veterans a lot easier.

More than 4500 meals were donated over that time.

“We decided to do this as we wanted to help them so they didn’t have to go to the shops at the time, especially with the number of cases.

“The money we used can only be used on veterans and we wanted a way to keep them safe. “The meals were huge and those living on their own could have four meals from it.”

Ms Baldi said many of the veterans had started to return to the RSL in person and were showing their gratitude.

“It was wonderful to see them again,” she said. “They were really appreciative of the meals, with a lot of them living on their own. “
