The Arundel Road Trestle Bridge in Keilor has reportedly been destroyed by flood waters.

Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos said she believes the historic bridge was dislodged by a shipping container swept up in the tide.

Emergency services have been called to ensure the container does not cause more damage further downstream.

Cr Tachos said landowners and residents abutting the river have suffered inundation and had pumps destroyed.

“I’ve never seen inundation starting from where the Maribyrnong River starts in Keilor North, which looked like an inland sea,” she said.

“I saw the torrent rip through the market gardens area with huge force.

“My immediate concern is safety, watch all the emergency alerts and rainfall forecasts.

“This flood threat isn’t over.”

Emergency Vic currently has a major flood warning in effect for the Maribyrnong River around Keilor.

A Brimbank council Facebook post said parts of Keilor are still affected by floodwaters and they are working diligently with Victoria Police and the SES to make sure our community is safe.

“Flora Street in Keilor is closed due to flooding,” the post said.

“The Arundel Road Heritage Bridge has been severely impacted.

“Sections of Kororoit Creek are also experiencing flooding so please don’t visit affected areas.”
