Active cases of COVID-19 within Brimbank have risen by five in the past 24 hours.

Of the cases, one is linked to the JBS abattoir in Brooklyn.

The Department of Health and Human Services said that all staff at the site are being tested and the department’s outbreak squad will visit today to ensure the appropriate public health actions are taken.

Brimbank postcodes 3021, 3038, 3012, and 3042 remain under lockdown, with residents only permitted to leave if they are shopping for food and supplies, out for medical care and caregiving, exercise and study or work.

On-the-spot fines will be issued for anyone outside for any other reason.

The new cases bring the total number of detected cases in Brimbank to 168, the third highest accumulation in the state behind Hume (245) and Melbourne (169).

It comes as the state recorded its worst day since the pandemic began with 127 new cases and two deaths.

A man in his 90s passed away in hospital on Sunday and another man in his 60s passed away in hospital this morning.

So far 22 people have died from the virus in Victoria.

The alarming numbers have prompted the closure of the New South Wales-Victoria border.

The border is set to close from midnight on Tuesday, following talks between both states’ premiers and the Prime Minister.
