Gateway Community Services is angling for volunteers to go fishing off piers with seniors and people who require low-level care.
The not-for-profit organisation, based in South Kingsville, supports people with disabilities from Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Wyndham.
Volunteer co-ordinator Fatima Milhem said volunteers were wanted who could go fishing on Mondays from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
“Volunteers are needed for support with sandwiches, making morning tea,” she said.
“Most importantly, it’s someone who has a little bit of knowledge in the fishing area … and are happy to support a senior with reeling up the fish, having a bit of chat about their life.
“I think it’s really fun – it’s an opportunity to go outdoors, get some fresh air.”
She said all equipment, morning tea and lunches were provided.
“The members are quite chirpy and quite interactive,” Ms Melhem said.
“They’re isolated and lonely, so they’re looking for an outlet to go out and talk and just get some interaction in the community.”
