Fight looms over runway

Melbourne Airport’s proposed new East-West runway will create significant noise issues for Brimbank, according to concerned residents.

The new runway, which is identified in the airport’s master plan, will be three kilometres long and accommodate a mix of domestic and international flights.

Sydenham Park Consultative Committee member Neil Hunichen said the proposed runway will have an adverse impact on Brimbank.

“People in Sydenham and even around Taylors Lakes and the Watergardens shopping centre will see planes fairly close,” he said.

“You’re bringing planes closer to a shopping centre and residential area, so there’s going to be noise.”

Mr Hunichen said the proposal will also see planes fly over significant sites such as the Organ Pipes Park and Robertsons Homestead.

“The community doesn’t want this. I’d love to see the airport be a bit more community-minded and consider another approach,” he said.

“With the development of a new, fast train, why build another runway when you have them at Avalon Airport, which doesn’t have a curfew?”

Keilor resident Susan Jennison, who has long lobbied the airport to return an aircraft noise monitor to the suburb, said Sydenham would be one of the biggest affected suburbs.

“Sydenham will be affected by this much like Keilor is now,” she said.

“I’ve certainly got concerns about this, particularly when you add the international flights element,” she said.

The master plan is currently undergoing an engagement process with government and key stakeholders.

Melbourne Airport head of corporate communications Grant Smith said flight corridors will be unveiled in two months time.

“Melbourne Airport is currently finalising its flight corridors with Airservices Australia,” he said. “Once complete the airport will share its proposed flight corridors and associated noise contours with the community.”
