Fatal house fire in St Albans

A body was discovered after fire destroyed a weatherboard house in St Albans in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal house fire on Power Street, to which firefighters were alerted at 2.48am.

A three-storey apartment building was also threatened by the fire, however firefighters ensured that damage was minimal. The building was heavily impacted by smoke with three of the townhouses sustaining minor fire damage.

Residents were evacuated from nearby properties and a community advice alert for smoke was issued.

The occupant of the weatherboard house, who is yet to be formally identified, was found deceased inside once the fire was extinguished.
