The first sod has been turned on works to revamp St Albans’ Errington Community Centre.
Works started on August 26, with the revamp to include a new 200-seat performing arts centre.
This, along with extra meeting rooms, a rehearsal room, dance space and an art and craft studio, have been funded by a $2.5 million donation from the St Albans Community Centre Co- operative Ltd.
Brimbank council chairman of administrators John Watson said that while some of the previous building would be retained, the new centre would better serve the many community groups relying on it.
“The redevelopment will deliver a range of benefits for users, including providing a much more inviting and comfortable space,” Mr Watson said.
“Not only does this project promise a fantastic new, larger facility for the community to enjoy, it also an expanded range of services for the community.”
The project, which will add a second storey to the existing building, is expected to be finished by May next year.
The total cost is estimated at $8.96 million.
Council acting community wellbeing director Kath Brackett said most current users of the community centre had been relocated to temporary spaces in the Errington precinct.
