A “sewage odour” that lingered across the western suburbs on Sunday night came from the Werribee and Point Cook areas, the Environment Protection Authority believes, but the agency has been unable to find the exact source.
The EPA ruled out local tips after officers visited landfills in Werribee, Ravenhall and the Western Treatment Plant.
It has received around 330 calls from the public since 8pm on Sunday, with many coming from Caroline Springs and Derrimut.
Regional Services Executive Director, Damian Wells said EPA officers had responded to odour reports today in Werribee and Point Cook.
“EPA is continuing to analyse the pollution reports against current weather conditions to gain a better understanding of the incident,” he said.
“Identifying the exact source can be difficult to locate as the odour plume moves with a change in weather conditions, which was further impacted by rains that fell yesterday.”
