Economic boost for Keilor Village as government department moves into council offices

Plans for Brimbank council's revamped Keilor offices were released earlier this year.

The Keilor Village local economy is set to be boosted with nearly 100 Department of Education and Training (DET) staff expected to move into Brimbank council’s former Keilor offices next year.

Council administrators last month approved drawing up a contract for a five-year lease with the department for the Old Calder Highway office.

The Keilor council office closed in July when all staff moved to the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.

Under the proposed agreement, the council will provide a “warm shell” for the DET – providing carpet, ceiling tiles and wall painting by February next year – on the eastern wing of the ground floor.

The department will fit-out the 1064-square-metre office space at its own expense.

“The location of school support staff will be beneficial to the economic wellbeing of the nearby Keilor Village,” a council report states.

A DET spokeswoman said it had been working with the council for an “area office”.

“Arrangements are yet to be finalised,” she said.

Renovation works for a “mixed community facility” at the Keilor building are expected to be finished by March or April next year.

The offices will also house an expanded library service and a new council customer service centre.
