Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents are being warned to not play with fire this Easter. Wherever you are, make sure the smoke alarms are working.

With the Easter break nearly here, the CFA and MFB have sent out a message urging the public to stay safe.

With many going away over Easter, Victoria’s fire services are advising the public to change the smoke alarm batteries in their caravans, campers and holiday houses.

A spokesperson said it’s vital that all dwellings, including holidays homes and caravans had working smoke alarms.

“Use the holiday time to change your smoke alarm batteries, test they are working and discuss a home escape plan. It’s important all household members can be involved and aware of what they need to do should a house fire break out wherever you are,“ the spokesperson said.

“It’s also not too late to change the smoke alarm batteries in your main residence if you haven’t already done so.

“Ensuring that you have a working smoke alarm is a great step to allay fears of house fires, as well as giving all household members the best chance of escaping a fire quickly and safely.”

MFB and CFA recommend households:

*Monthly: test smoke alarms by pressing the test button with a broom handle.

*Annually: gently dust around the outside cover of your smoke alarm.

*Annually: replace your 9-volt battery at the end of daylight saving.

* Every 10 years: replace your smoke alarms.
