A mega Earth Day plant-out by hundreds of youngsters from two Sunshine primary schools will be another giant step towards restoring Kororoit Creek.
The $4785 Melbourne Water-funded project is working to revegetate the riverside woodlands that would have clad the creek banks before European settlement and subsequent farming.
Sunshine Heights Primary School pupils will team up with Sunshine Primary for stage two of the project, and Brimbank council is also involved.
“Sunshine Primary will be joining in to get a taste in preparation for their own adoption patch next year,” Friends of Kororoit Creek president Jessica Gerger said.
“The students and staff at Sunshine Heights Primary are very proud of their adopted section of the creek … filling their section with indigenous plants and tending to it, creating a wonderful habitat for local fauna.
“The adopted patch is a valuable resource in terms of science, sustainability, art, creative writing … you name it,” Ms Gerger said.
Children will be entertained by Roberto the tram conductor, The Legless Lizards and Peter Joseph Head, while the litter arm of the Friends group, Beautiful Brimbank, will also teach children about the effects of dumped rubbish on water health and wildlife habitat.
More schools are being encouraged to adopt a section of the creek.
