The crowds flocked back to Calder Park over the weekend with drag racing’s Australian Nationals returning to the raceway for the first time since 2001.

Nationals’ promoter Peter Pisadilis estimated crowds of nearly 7000 each day, despite the morning drizzle, who came to see the 290 competitors including drag legends  John Zappia and Peter Kapiris.

Pisalidis said the turnout despite the weather proved drags were “back to stay”.

”The weather wasn’t conducive to drag racing. If the weather was fine you can bet your backside we would have got 20 to 30,000. But we were happy with how it went and there were track records everywhere,” he said.

More drag racing is scheduled for the raceway during the Labor Day weekend in March.
