Dog park to get revamp

Locals at the Davitt Drive dog run have welcomed the news of upgrades.

Deer Park dog owners will be able to enjoy play time with their canine friends in more comfort, thanks to work planned for the Davitt Drive dog park.

Brimbank council says the Davitt Drive Reserve, including the off-leash area, will be upgraded in the near future.

Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the revamp would include a number of significant features.

“Council is in the planning stages for an upgrade to Davitt Drive Reserve in 2018-2019, subject to adoption of the 2018-2019 budget,” he said. “Davitt Drive Reserve is classified as a suburban park under council’s Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan.

“As a suburban park, the upgrade would include a new high-quality playground, additional seating, barbecue area, shelter, picnic facilities and extensive tree planting.

“Additional seating will also be installed within the enclosed dog off-leash facility.”

Deer Park resident Ken Terrill, a regular user of the park, welcomed news of the upgrade.

“There’s been talk about upgrades for a while now, but we never see any action,” he said.

“The park has been neglected for too long.

“It’s well used by the community and it’s time for an upgrade. There’s only one seat in the park at the moment, which isn’t enough. Some days we can get upwards of 20 people there
at once, and given that a lot of us there are elderly and need to sit, one seat doesn’t really work.”

Mr Terrill said park regulars had been concerned about its state for some time.

By the end of 2017-2018, Brimbank council will have upgraded 99 parks at a cost of about $26.5 million since the Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan was adopted in 2008.
