Disability hub a step closer

A disability hub for Brimbank is a step closer.

The council has undertaken a feasibility study into creating a hub in conjunction with the Brimbank Disability Advisory Committee, the Brimbank Disability Network and the Project Reference Group.

Cr Virginia Tachos said establishing a hub was vital both for people with a disability and carers.

“There is a real need expressed by Brimbank residents and carers experiencing barriers,” she said.

“They need a dedicated and flexible space where they can receive face-to-face support.

“Not all residents in Brimbank will be eligible for NDIS and we have seen in the delay with the rollout of a local area co-ordinator, that families are confused about how and why they may be impacted.”

One of the key recommendations from the study was to facilitate partnerships between the local area co-ordinator, National Disability Insurance Australia and other western region councils to develop a database and on-line information portal to support informed decision-making for people with disabilities, their families and carers.

“There should be a place where Brimbank carers and people with a disability can attend and find out where they can get assistance,” Cr Tachos said.
