Keilor Park is hoping to kick off the Essendon District Football League division 2 season with a bang, hosting Coburg Districts on Good Friday.
It will be the first time there has been a division 2 Good Friday match and the Devils are hoping it becomes a new tradition.
Devils coach Paul Guicas said having been part of the annual division 1 Good Friday match between Taylors Lakes and Hillside for a number of years, he was keen to see the Devils get involved in something too.
“It’s the first time second division clubs have been part of it,” he said.
“I thought to myself, premier and first division clubs have games, why can’t we have one in the second division?
“I know what it’s like to be part of the day and it’s pretty special.”
Guicas said he reached out to Coburg Districts coach Tom Gleeson, who were both at East Keilor at the same time, to see if they were interested in the Good Friday game and it went from there.
The Devils are hoping to attract a decent-sized crowd. The match is a twilight match and will be played after both the premier division match between Keilor and Strathmore, and Taylors and Hillside match.
Guicas said they were looking to have some children’s attractions and food trucks at the ground on the night, COVID-19 restrictions pending.
For Guicas the day also marks his first official game in charge of the Devils senior side, 18 months after having been appointed coach.
“We have a countdown clock in the clubrooms,” he said.
“There is the anticipation and I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully putting on a good show.
“We just want to get out there.”
The Keilor Park versus Coburg Districts match starts at 5pm on April 2.
