Brimbank council’s demand that a walking and cycling path connect Brimbank Park to a proposed Keilor East play centre for up to 100 children is “unreasonable”, the developer says.
A proposed commercial development, including a cafe and play centre, on the eastern side of Keilor Park Drive just north of the Western Ring Road, is expected to create at least 100 jobs, and is currently before the council.
However, the applicants have baulked at the council’s request for a pedestrian and bicycle path to link Brimbank Park to an intersection near the site.
Several previous plans for the site have been rejected by both the council and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. In a letter to the council, the applicant said the council’s request for the estimated $150,000 path linking Brimbank Park and the Western Ring Road with the Keilor Park Drive intersection was “unreasonable and highly cost prohibitive”.
“The majority of visitors to the site will visit the site by car,” the letter stated. “There is no immediate benefit of such infrastructure to the development.
“We have worked with council and addressed significant issues relating to this development, and we believe the current layout and mix of uses provides a great outcome for a site that has remained vacant for a long time.”
The council will assess the application.
