Derrimut Village Shopping Centre is set to undergo an expansion.
While COVID-19 may have slowed down the retail sector, the Derrimut institution is set to welcome a number of new shops.
Construction is slated to begin on the expansion in the near future, adding a further 3500 square metres to the complex and a 7-Eleven.
Three additional retailers have already recommitted to joining the complex, which already includes Coles, Chemist Warehouse and McDonald’s.
The Salvation Army, NQR Discount and Variety and Ezy Buys have all committed to be part of the expanded centre.
Nick Segran of Leedwell Property is marketing the expansion and said growth in an uncertain time is a much-needed boost for the sector.
“With the retail environment evolving on a daily basis, the inclusion of three new retailers to the market certainly promotes some positive affirmation to the industry,” he said.
“With the imminent rise of discount shopping, each retailer will be a welcomed addition to the centre.
“All adhering to a common theme and ultimately complementing each other in its own right”.
He said it was important to move forward now for a time when normalcy resumes.
“Despite disruption from COVID-19, many groups we are dealing with understand that this will pass and … it’s important to continue to develop amenity and convenience to Melbourne’s growth suburbs.”
The development is set to be completed later this year, adding a further 1800 square metres of retail space to the centre.
