Derrimut man arrested in joint-agency drug op

A Derrimut man has been arrested for drug trafficking as a result of a joint operation between the Australian Federal Police, Brimbank Divisional Response Unit and Joint Task Force ICARUS

Police allege they found cash, large commercial quantities of MDMA and cocaine, commercial quantities of amphetamine, and quantities of cannabis and other drugs at the Berkeley Crescent address about 7am.

A 24-year-old Derrimut man was arrested at a nearby address.

Hiep Quang Truong appeared before an out of sessions hearing charged with large commercial trafficking, commercial trafficking, and possession of proceeds of crime.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

Detective Senior Sergeant NEWLAN of Joint Task Force ICARUS said, “This morning’s very successful outcome provides another example of the Australian Border Force, the AFP and Victoria Police working increasingly together, and of the agencies’ combined commitment to reducing the harm caused by drugs.”

“Drugs, particularly crystal methylamphetamine, are having a terrible impact on our community, albeit by driving volume crime and crimes of violence, or by contributing to road trauma, family violence and mental health issues,” he said.

The activity was part of an ongoing investigation by the AFP, codenamed Operation KALYKE, targeting the importation of border controlled drugs and money laundering.

Joint Task Force ICARUS is comprised of personnel drawn from the AFP, Australian Border Force and Victoria Police.

The task force targets those who seek to utilise international mail and air cargo system for criminal activity.

Law enforcement agencies need the public’s ongoing assistance to minimise the harm caused to the community by drugs and people with information are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
