Deer Park’s jobs boon set in concrete

A Deer Park plant that will help in the building of the new Metro train tunnel will open later this year, creating up to 80 new jobs.

Construction of the $18 million manufacturing facility in the Deer Park industrial precinct will begin in coming weeks.

It is scheduled to be operating by the end of the year, producing more than 50,000 concrete segments to line the project’s twin nine-kilometre tunnels.

The Metro Tunnel will add five new underground stations to the Melbourne train system once it is completed in 2025.

Up to 50 jobs at the Deer Park plant will go to former auto workers.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen said the plant would play a crucial role.

“The Metro tunnel will transform our public transport system by creating space to run more trains, more often, right across Melbourne,” she said.

“We are delivering the Metro tunnel on time and on budget, creating almost 7000 jobs for Victorians in the
process.”

Once completed, the Deer Park plant will produce about 150 concrete segments a day, each weighing 4.5 tonnes, before they are transported to the tunnel.
