Dawson Street upgrade opens

A new-look Dawson Street is becoming the latest anchor in Sunshine’s CBD revival after Brimbank council opened the first round of upgrades last week.

Sections of the street have been closed and detours put in place while works were under way, as new rain gardens were “swaled” in on both sides of the Dawson and Service streets ground level carparks. Two paths now lead from the intersection to Brimbank’s multi-deck carpark behind Sunshine Plaza.

The first stage of upgrades cost $2.6 million (of which council contributed $2.1 million).

Mayor John Hedditch said the benefits for residents would be huge.

“The area now functions as a great place for people to stop, rest and move through,” Cr Hedditch said.

“The reworking of the on-street carpark to reduce the number of driveway crossovers – alongside new footpaths, the new pedestrian shelter, lighting, and clearly marked pedestrian crossings – has significantly improved the area for both pedestrians and drivers.”

There are new street trees, a 50-metre pedestrian shelter, better street lighting, and a new layout for the carparks, he said. Cr Hedditch cited Dawson Street as a great example of the council’s investment in transforming Sunshine’s town centre.

“Our next step is to get a litter education and compliance program in place.”

The next stage of works will improve the connection between Dawson Street and Sunshine Leisure Centre, including informal green areas.
