Several properties across the north west of Melbourne have been raided in relation to five Victorian men who allegedly attempted to leave Australia and fight for ISIS last week.
The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team executed warrants at a number of properties as part of Operation Middleham, police say, however exact suburbs have not been revealed.
The Melbourne men, suspected of trying to travel to Indonesia from Cape York on a seven-metre fishing boat in a bid to get to Syria, will face terrorism related charges in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
“This operational activity is not linked to any increased threat or danger to the community,” a Police Media spokesperson said.
Fairfax Media reported one of the men, 21-year-old Kadir Kaya, was a member of Copperfield College’s youth parliament.
Another man, Antonio Granata, 25, is believed to have family in Melbourne’s west.
