Brimbank council’s Keilor offices will be closed for nearly a year as works start on a revamped “mixed community facility” to open in its place by mid next year.
The office doors were closed last Friday.
Renovation works are expected to start next month and be finished by March or April next year.
Ratepayers will be able to have general inquiries answered through a service at Keilor library between 1pm and 5pm, Monday to Friday, while the works are carried out, but no payment services will be available.
The council awarded a $1.7million contract in June to refurbish the centre, however commercial tenants are currently being sought for the ground floor.
Infrastructure and environment director Neil Whiteside said the services to be offered had still not been finalised.
The offices will house an expanded library service, and a new customer service centre and community spaces.
Keilor staff moved to the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre at Sunshine, which opened on Monday.
Brimbank council candidate Richard Carthew, a Sydenham resident, is concerned residents in the north of the municipality will have limited access to council services because of the move.
“I’ll be campaigning to have council meetings in Keilor again, to keep democracy in the north.”
