Brimbank Council has committed to become 100 per cent carbon neutral by 2030 under its Climate Emergency Plan.
This includes a fully electric vehicle fleet by this time.
Brimbank’s new Mayor Bruce Lancashire has chosen a fully electric car as his mayoral vehicle – a Hyundai IONIQ electric car. It is council’s first fully electric mayoral vehicle.
Cr Lancashire said every action toward the carbon neutral goal – big and small – was important.
“I’m pleased to be driving an electric vehicle because the way we travel around the planet needs to change if we are going to save it. Electric vehicles can be run clean, green and very cheap compared with conventional petrol cars that run on fossil fuels,” he said.
“And it’s not just the vehicles we drive, but walking, cycling, catching public transport where we can reduce air pollution, improves health, and helps transition our community toward a zero emissions future.”
According to recent media reports, the postcode 3020 – covering Sunshine, Albion, Sunshine North and Sunshine West – has the most electric vehicles and plug in hybrid electric vehicles in Victoria.
