New light has been thrown on 17 Brimbank suburbs as part of a $7 million street light upgrade project that will cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The last of more than 11,600 energy efficient lights were installed across Brimbank earlier this year as part of the three-year Powering Down program.
The lights are expected to cut energy use by more than 3.5 million kWh and reduce emissions by 3800 tonnes each year.
Hillside, Kealba, Keilor, Keilor Lodge, Keilor North, and Tullamarine were not included in the roll out.
Chair of administrators John Watson said it was the largest energy and greenhouse reduction project ever undertaken in the municipality.
The council wants to reduce its greenhouse emissions by 50 per cent by 2022-23.
“In 2015-16, council’s greenhouse gas emissions were 20 per cent less than in 2011 – putting us well on the way to achieving our ambitious greenhouse reduction strategy target,” Mr Watson said.
It is expected $10 million will be saved in energy consumption costs over the 20-year lifespan of the new lights.
High energy-using mercury vapour 80 watt lights were replaced in Albanvale, Albion, Ardeer, Brooklyn, Cairnlea, Deer Park, Delahey, Derrimut, Keilor Park, Keilor Downs, Kings Park, St Albans, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Sunshine West, Sydenham and Taylors Lakes.
