Brimbank council has called on the state government to reverse a VicRoads decision to remove licence testing and roadworthy checks from services at its new Sunshine site.
After months of public protests to have the decision changed, mayor John Hedditch said it was time for roads minister Luke Donnellan to intervene.
“We believe this is an important access and equity issue for Brimbank residents and people from neighbouring areas who will now have to travel much further for licence testing – to Melton, Werribee, Sunbury or Broadmeadows,” Cr Hedditch said.
“At a time of rising unemployment, falling real wage levels, rapid population growth and increasing road congestion, this decision is bad news for Brimbank and our neighbours.
“Local councils and our local MPs are now joining with Brimbank council to continue the push for licence testing services to remain in the Brimbank area.
“We have invited VicRoads to provide the data on current services and are waiting for VicRoads to come and discuss with council the future options for a more accessible, comprehensive and affordable licence testing service.”
The council has written to Mr Donnellan, seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the future need for a suitable replacement service for the area.
