Council encourages residents to have their say

Brimbank council is encouraging residents to have their say on the newly released Melbourne Airport draft Master Plan and draft Major Development Plan.

The plans which were released on Monday, reveal the airport’s plans for the third runway.

The master plan, which the airport is required to do every five years, has plans for 2027, 2046 and longer term development.

Both plans confirm a north-south direction for the third runway, which is set to be completed by the end of this decade.

The new runway is expected to take four to five years to build in a staged process, and will be built 1.3 kilometres from the existing south-west runway.

It will be 3000-metres long and will result in the shortening of the east-west runway and changes to flight paths.

Many Brimbank residents have raised concerns about the impact of the new runway and changed flight paths, as has the council.

The council has previously written to the Melbourne Airport, Airservices Australia, Australian Government Chief Medical Officer, the Victorian Chief Health Officer, the Aviation Noise Ombudsman, and the Federal Government about potential noise and amenity related concerns.

Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the council will prepare a submission as part of the community consultation.

“Brimbank council will promote the exhibition of Melbourne Airport’s draft 2022 Master Plan and preliminary draft Major Development Plan for the third runway to the community, and make community facilities available to Melbourne Airport for community consultation, so as to encourage Brimbank residents to have their say and submit their view about proposed plans to Melbourne Airport,” she said.

“Brimbank is already impacted by aircraft operations and noise from Melbourne Airport, and council has previously expressed concerns about the health impacts of the proposed third runway on the Brimbank community.

“Council also recognises the economic importance of Melbourne Airport to Brimbank and the Victorian economy, and the need to facilitate the growth and development of Melbourne Airport, as well as manage and mitigate the amenity and environmental impacts.

“Council will prepare a submission… That responds to a range of considerations including health and noise, environment, economic, access, and other impacts.”
