Council aims to tackle gambling

Brimbank council’s new program to reduce the harm of gambling will be launched via an online event tonight.

With Brimbank topping the state in pokie losses in recent times, the council has been a huge advocate in trying to reduce the harm it causes.

The new project ‘Invest in You’ Changing the Brimbank Story’, showcases how you can change your story by investing in you rather than hoping for a win.

Today’s event provides a forum for community conversations to take place and for people to share their journey from gambling to recovery.

The council has also developed some informative resources that offer alternatives to gambling and promote and raise awareness of no-charge and low cost activities after consultation with community organisations

These resources will soon be available through Council’s libraries, neighbourhood houses, leisure centres, and on our website.

The council will aim to produce materials in a number of different voices and languages.

Brimbank Mayor Ranka Rasic said that the community continues to suffer as the daily losses grow when venues are open.

“In partnership with the council, the Invest in You project has been developed for the community, by the community,” she said.

“We hope this project will help our communities invest in their individual interests and skills as well as social and cultural connections, to build a future that is free from gambling harm.”

The event starts at 7pm.
